ANIMULA


Animula or little soul, is a series on underland entanglements related to heritage, myth, loss and emergance in unstable environments. The various constellations of research and sculpture created have been presented over the last 4 years. Working across meduims from generative carving, steelwork, pewter casts, grogged clay, to text, video and soundscape. In each iteration, viewers are immersed in undulating landscapes, speculative spaces, drawn to a horizon underneath our feet. The vastness and unseen nature of excavation explores relationships of matter, and organism, mourning and primal response within the earth.


2024

Working with active and inactive mine sites, ongoing iterations of Animula survey the role of descending underground as a transforming act. From these encounters and wider research into the material history and speculative bodies that occupy the imagination of the underland; I generative alabaster carvings that morph and change in their environment as a material reminiscent of monuments. From hanging stone ‘oculars’ serve as openings to other realms, intervening with light in the space. To vocal recordings envelop and reflect off the work, while a portal into descent is experienced from a metal ‘tunnel’, reflective maps and curious video screens within a new liminal space.


Through exploration of industrial landscapes, identity, transformation, and feminist perspectives, I positions my work as voice in the ongoing conversation about art’s role in societal and environmental transformation.

2022/23

‘Animula’ is an ongoing series drawing on underland entanglements based on research in Moray Firth caves in Scotland and early mine cartography. Using excavation as an entry point, I explore relationships of entangled precarious matter and organisms, in states of emergence and decay. Presented at Xxijra Hii in 2023 the new series of alabaster carvings depict amorphous forms seemingly in a bio transformation and without catogrisation. These carvings are woven into a winding network of vestibular forms, scattered schematics and algal ‘wet look’ surfaces, hand bent steel and experimentatal cast pewter. Central to the work is a collaborative sound piece developed with Clay Slade, that filled the space with choral utterances responding to texts written at the back of the cave.&#38;nbsp;

ALOE VERA 3 GENERATIONS


A project focused on memorial and care through plants. 
This body of research from 2018 looked at alternate connections to mourning
 specifically around an aloe vera plant that travelled through three generations in my family. Considering reciprocity of care, I developed a short nattive film exploring the intimacies matter left behind, using descriptive and experimental text it weaves through memories and myth: From Lazarus to Aloe as the plant of the immortal, to a personal history of
care, and the precarious nature of things. Centering the plant as a point of exploring
comntamination and collaboration it acts as a thread between states; inside/
outside, knowing/unknowing, flux/stasis.Alongside the film cast limbs in pewter of the aloe plant are un-archived in open oak vitrines, both vulnerable to disruption and creaping beyond thier allowed peramiters.

	
This project led to the Seedlings for Solace campaign that i founded in the pandemic. It was a cross london community project&#38;nbsp;that raised money for Solace Womens Aid - centered plants as a portal for growth and care.

DESCENT

	
A work in collaboration with London Thames Water, videoing a celaning and extaction process of  the pipes below UCL. A project that considers differnt types of descent, the feral and disruptive aspects of unseen movements of matter, wanted and unwated. Shown alongslide various cast and epherimal fragments unearthed in agrigcultural land that was making way for modern water pipe systems- the duality of the two landscapes consider the ideas of human impaccts on land through various industry. Cast work incliude:  the centres of hag flit nodes which were then knapped; grass rhyzome casts; mini ground boar holes.Shown at Slade Gallery, London 2019

Currently working on the&#38;nbsp;Animula series; an expansive sculptural installation examining the
geographic entanglement of organisms, people and material at various cave sites
and mines in the UK. I navigate in-between spaces, creating work that questions
the beginnings and ending of material contamination, death, and our relationship to both the strata
and the horizon. From generative stone carving and metal work, to short narrative films and cast artifacts I explore material and process that stretch time and viscosity of these sites.&#38;nbsp;

Graduating from the Slade School of fine Art in 2022, I received the Adrian Carruthers Award 22/23 in partnership with ACME and Prankerd Jones Memorial Prize for excellence in Fine Art at the Slade. 
Solo shows include: FRIEZE FOCUS, Frieze London 2024.&#38;nbsp;ANIMULA; mud time fissures in tethered descent at Xxijra Hii in 2023. In residence in 2023 at Cove Park in Scotland.
